Some links
Campsites : www.woodalls.com,
www.camping-usa.com, www.reserveusa.com, www.campground.com
- • In this pages you will find lists of all campsites in the US. Usually they include the telephone number, the fees and the itinerary to get there. The Woodalls guide is very complete and you can find it in any public library of the US. If you are planning to camp these websites will be of much help.
The weather : www.weather.com
- • We used this page to do a calendar with the higher and lower temperatures in the cities we were going to be in. You can find information about the rain, the sunrise, the sunset, etc. Even if you can never tell the weather it will help you to know what you can expect during the journey.
Youth hostels: www.hiyah.org (only California)
- • Finding a place to sleep in California can be difficult. Even if there are many motels, very often and specially during week-ends they are full. Most of the campsites are managed by the government and it is necessary to book in advance, so it may be a good idea you make a reservation in a youth hostel, even if you will end up paying the same as in a motel ($40-50).
Bed and Breakfast: www.bedandbreakfast.com
(expensive, in general >$80)
- • They are small houses run by the owners, but we only recommend them if you have a high budget or you want to give yourself a treat. Most of them cost around $100.
General information: www.traveldata.com,
www.grouptravels.com
- • All kind of information that can be very helpful before setting off.
Route 66: www.route66.com
- • There is little practical information about the Route. Most of it is about the places to visit ( advertising). Anyway if you want to know where is the Route 66 shop in Chicago (where you can get maps and staff) you will find it here. You will find addresses of the different Route 66 associations and news of the coming events.
Motel chains:www.microtelinn.com, www.knightsinn.com, www.daysinn.com, www.crosscountryinns.com, www.budgethost.cocom, www.super8.com
- • We did not go to any of these. We can say that are the antithesis of what Route 66 means. You will find them everywhere. Maybe if you want to avoid having problems when arriving in California…If you want our advice there is nothing like the old motels run by families where you can experiment the decline of the time in which every motel was different. Resides, you will save a lot of bucks.
